V Dominican Book Fair Features Publications by GFDD and FUNGLODE

October 7, 2011

Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and its counterpart in the United States, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), were part of the New York V Dominican Book Fair, which took place at Boricua College in Manhattan from October 7 to 9.
Sponsored jointly by the Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States, the Consulate General of the Dominican Republic in New York and by the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, the annual event proudly celebrates the vitality and richness of Dominican culture.

This year’s Fair was dedicated to distinguished writer and professor Dr. Franklin Gutierrez, as well as other Dominican writers residing in Puerto Rico. The opening event, chaired by
the Minister of Culture, José Rafael Lantigua, was held on Friday, October 7 at the United Palace and featured artistic performances by Nini Caffaro, Rafael Solano, Karina Paisán, Ileana Reynos, Aníbal de Peña and Jankarlo.

The V Dominican Book Fair, held under the slogan "Reading sets you
apart,"
also featured a permanent poetry exhibit on the walls of the Franklin’s La Casita Pavillion and a sample of Dominican tomes of great historic value.

Within this framework, GFDD and FUNGLODE actively contributed through their Publications Department, represented by Mrs. Arsenia Miranda. Their participation culminated on October 8 with a presentation of one of their most recent research projects, the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of
the Environment.  The first-ever book of its kind in DR, it is a result of almost seven years of intense work carried out by an international team of experts and contains the most up-to-date and complete information on the country’s environment and natural resources. It examines the current state of the environment in the Dominican Republic and its relationship and impact on other areas vital to its development.

This editorial project, directed by GFDD
Executive Director Natasha Despotovic, was presented by Emy Rodríguez, who manages the organization’s Environment Programs.
