Theater Piece Inspired by Marichal & Roseboro Opens to Resounding Praise in Santo Domingo

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in coordination with the Global Multimedia Institute (GMI) presented the theater piece “Juan and John” on Saturday, February 6. The play was inspired by the friendship between the two baseball players, Juan Marichal and the late John Roseboro.

Marichal, along with his relatives and other well-known Dominican Big League players, attended the performance that opened to a full house. Created and put on by Roger Guenveur Smith with sound and video design by Marc Anthony Thompson, was shown in December 2009 at New York City’s Public Theater where Smith and Thompson won an Obie Award for “A Huey P. Newton Story.”

The performance took place at the Mauricio Báez Cultural Plaza auditorium, located at 164 Mauricio Báez St. in Villa Juana, Santo Domingo.
