GFDD/Funglode to Host UN Panel Discussion on the Dominican Republic’s Efforts to Reduce Violence against Women and Promote Gender Empowerment
The Dominican Republic, together with 121 other countries endorsed the United Nations General Assembly’s Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict on October 2, 2013. Looking to extend this effort further, GFDD and Funglode would like to present an update session on the Dominican Republic’s efforts to reduce violence against women and promote gender empowerment to this year’s participants of the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

“Progress Cannot Be Achieved While Social and Economic Deprivations Persist” States GFDD during the 54th Session of the Commission for Social Development
The Commission which opened on Wednesday February 3, under the priority theme “Rethinking and strengthening social development in the contemporary world”, held its last day of negotiations on Friday, during which it approved three draft resolutions by the Economic and Social Council with one resolution on Africa’s development.

GFDD/Funglode Call for Greater Cooperation in Technology Transfer and Innovative Financing for Development Mechanisms at ECOSOC Second Dialogue with Civil Society
On behalf of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), GFDD’s UN Programs Manager Marc Jourdan delivered a joint oral statement to ECOSOC on Wednesday February 10th, as part of the second dialogue by ECOSOC with civil society on the longer-term positioning of the United Nations development system. Focusing on ways the UN may adapt to the new requirements of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the
statement calls for the need to strengthen technology transfer in developing countries and highlights the importance of innovative partnerships to free up new sources of development finance.

GFDD hosted a panel discussion at the UN today to celebrate the 54th Session of the Commission on Social Development (CSocD54). The event, entitled Financing Tools for Reducing Social Inequalities, aimed to contribute to the priority theme of CSocD54: Rethinking and strengthening social development in the contemporary world. Reflecting on the financing achievements of UN development policy making in 2015, the panelists looked back at the Third International Conference on
Financing for Development and the recent Paris Climate Meeting and attempted to address one central question: how can the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) serve as an instrument to reduce inequalities and encourage a people-centered approach to strengthening social development and care for the future of our planet?

GFDD Participates in 70th Anniversary Celebrations of UN Economic and Social Council
GFDD, in its capacity as an accredited non-profit organization with special consultative status to United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), participated in the Commemoration of ECOSOC’s 70th Anniversary on Friday, January 22, 2016. The special event brought together former and present Bureau Members of the Council and other stakeholders that have and continue to play major positive roles in upholding ECOSOC’s mission in fully achieving global sustainable development,
while recognizing that they still face major challenges in the road to make the 2030 Agenda a reality.

GFDD/Funglode to Host UN Panel Discussion on Financing Tools for Reducing Social Inequalities during CSocD54
To advance the commitments made during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in 2015, to reduce inequalities in the global social development and to care for the future of our planet GFDD/Funglode along with the NGO Committee on Social Development and the NGO Committee on Financing for Development will host an interactive debate on Thursday February 4, 2016 from 1.15pm to 2.30pm at the United Nations Conference Room E.

GFDD Appointed Chair of UNA USA Sub-committee Promoting Sustainable Environmental Ecosystems
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), represented by its UN Programs & Outreach Manager, Marc Jourdan, was today appointed Chair of a new sub-committee by the United Nations Association of the United States (UNA USA) Council of Organizations entitled “Support and Promote a Sustainable Environmental Ecosystem.”

“We Need Programs that Overcome Deep Rooted Institutional Discrimination” States a Participant at the UN Commemoration of the International Decade for People of African Descent
GFDD/Funglode was present at the UN for a special event titled, “Confronting the Silence: Perspectives and Dialogue on Structural Racism against People of African Descent Worldwide” on Wednesday November 3. The event, which commemorated the International Decade for People of African Descent Taking place (2015-2024) took place before a packed auditorium in the Economic and Social Council Chamber. Mr. Harry Belafonte, speaking in his capacity as UNICEF Goodwill
Ambassador gave the keynote address underlining that “the UN is the perfect setting for resolution of these conflicts.”

UN Secretary-General Concluding the week with celebrations of the 70th Anniversary of the UN, both the General Assembly and the DPI NGO Executive Committee
GFDD/Funglode were present at the UN Headquarters for the 70th Anniversary commemorations of the United Nations on Friday October 23. The events which were held by the General Assembly and the DPI NGO Executive Committee (the liaison office between the NGO community and the United Nations Department of Public Information) to mark the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter, and the creation of the United Nations.

UN Delegates Confirm the Need for Enhanced Civil Society Participation in the 2030 Development Agenda during 2nd Committee Meetings on Sustainable Development
GFDD/Funglode was present at the United Nations for the annual meetings of the UN General Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) from Monday October 19 to Friday October 22nd. During the meetings, UN delegates and civil society representatives emphasized the need for an effective global response to climate change and jointly called for further engagement of civil society in the work of the second committee and in particular the implementation phase of the UN’s
newly adopted 2030 Development Agenda.
