GFDD Participates in the 2017 Leadership Summit of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA)
In its capacity as Vice Chair of the United Nations Association of the USA Council of Organizations, GFDD/FUNGLODE participated in the 2017 edition of UNA-USA Leadership Summit from Sunday 11 to Tuesday 13, June. The annual summit took place in Washington DC, in the heart of the nation’s capital, in an aim to reach out to America’s political representatives. This year, a record number of attendees gathered for 3 days, to market their support to the United Nations, but also to
advocate for the full funding of the international organization by the United States.

GFDD Stresses that the Dominican Whale Watching Industry Has Major Economic and Community Benefits During Historic UN Ocean Conference
GFDD/FUNGLODE participated in the first UN Ocean Conference, which was convened from 5-9 June 2017 at UN Headquarters, in New York, US. The Conference which opened on Monday June 5, under the priority theme “high-level United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”, held its last day of negotiations on Friday June 9, when it approved a global
agreement to reverse the decline of the ocean’s health, and more than 1,300 pledged actions for protecting the blue.

As the United Nations commemorated the first edition of its Ocean Conference from June 5 to 9, 2017, GFDD and Funglode took this opportunity to host its own side event and raise awareness of the special relationship that the Dominican Republic has with the Ocean and the challenges it faces to achieve sustainable development. The event was held in partnership with the NGO Committee on Sustainable Development-NY as well as Peace Boat US and several other NGOs, at UN Headquarters on

GFDD Meets with UNESCO Director and UN Ambassadors for Small Island Developing States
GFDD conducted official visits to UN missions in May to meet with heads of delegations and discuss future opportunities for collaboration. Yamile Eusebio, GFDD’s Acting Co-Executive Director, and Marc Jourdan, GFDD’s UN Programs & Outreach Manager met with Ambassador Uludong of the Permanent Mission of Palau to the United Nations, Ambassador Odo Tevi of Vanuatu, Ambassador Webson of Antigua and Barbuda and Ambassador Sareer of the Maldives over the course of the last few
weeks.

UNA-DR, GFDD/Funglode and GlobalMuners Announce the Launch of CILA 2017 and NYMUNLAC 2018
The United Nations Association of Dominican Republic (UNA-DR), Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) and the latter organization’s sister institution in the United States, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) announced on Tuesday, May 30, alongside the Mexican association GlobalMuners, the celebration of the International Conference of the Americas (CILA, for its acronym in Spanish) from Sunday, October 29 until Thursday, November 2, 2017 and the
New York-Model United Nations Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean (NYMUNLAC), which will take place from Sunday, April 1 until Thursday, April 5, 2018.

GFDD hosted a meeting entitled “Short and Medium-Term Growth Prospects in Latin America and the Caribbean” at GFDD’s New York Office on Wednesday, June 24th, 2017. The discussion was led by Daniel Titelman, Chief of the Economic Development Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Titelman is an expert on monetary and financial policies, and has substantive experience in macroeconomic and financial issues, a topic on which he has
published numerous papers.

GFDD/Funglode Participates in the 2017 Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum)
GFDD/Funglode participated in the second session of the Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (STI Forum), which took place at the United Nations Headquarters from May 15 to 16, 2017. This annual forum supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration and partnerships through the sharing of information, experiences, best practices and policy
advice.

GFDD/Funglode Deliver Oral Remarks on Impact Investing during the 2017 ECOSOC Integration Segment on Poverty Eradication
GFDD/Funglode participated in the 2017 ECOSOC Integration, which took place at United Nations Headquarters from May 8 to 10, 2017. The annual meeting serves as a platform for key stakeholders to identify and discuss opportunities and challenges in developing integrated approaches to tackle sustainable development challenges.

GFDD/FUNGLODE Co-Signs the NGO Major Group Position Paper for the 2017 High-Level Political Forum
In its capacity as a member of the Non-Governmental Organization Major Group (NGO MG) of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, GFDD/Funglode has co-signed, together with 148 other NGOs, the official NGO MG Position Paper for the 2017 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) which will take place from July 10 to 19, 2017. This paper expresses the common views of civil society regarding this year’s HLPF theme: “Eradicating poverty and promoting
prosperity in a changing world.”

GFDD Participates in UN General Assembly Interactive Dialogue on Harmony with Nature
In commemoration of International Mother Earth Day, GFDD/FUNGLODE participated in the Interactive Dialogue of the 71th Session of the General Assembly on Harmony with Nature on Friday, April 21, at the UN Headquarters. This year, the theme of the dialogue was “The Earth Jurisprudence”, recognizing that the Earth is the source of all laws that govern life.
