New York Screening Premiere of Lago Enriquillo: A Prelude to Climate Change at the United Nations Event on Climate Change

Dominican Tax System Reform Examined during UN Panel
On Wednesday April 22, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization Fundación Global Democracia y Desarollo (Funglode) hosted a panel discussion on tax reform as a trigger for development. The event took place as part of the official launch of the in-house publication entitled “The 2012 Dominican Tax Reform in Historical and Regional Context” by Dr. James Mahon, GFDD Fellow and Woodrow Wilson Professor of Political Science at Williams
College, Massachusetts. Attendees gathered in Conference Room 6 of the General Assembly Building for a presentation of Dr. Mahon’s work during which he commented on the disappointing effects of the 2012 reform, despite extraordinarily favorable political conditions at its initiation.

UNESCO Confirms that 84 million fewer children are out of school since 1999 at NYC Launch Event of the 2015 EFA Global Monitoring Report
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) attended the United Nations on Thursday March 6 2015 for the launch of the 2015 EFA Global Monitoring Report – Education for All 2000-2015: Achievements and Challenges (the Report) organized by UNESCO. The report, which provides readers with an assessment of progress, best practices and failures at the national and international levels, stresses that 84 million fewer children are out of school since 1999.

The Dominican Republic Model United Nations Conference (NYDRMUN) 2015, a conference organized by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) with support from Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) came to a close today on Wednesday April 1. The Closing Ceremony took place, before more than 300 model UN delegates from middle schools across the Dominican Republic, in the General Assembly Hall
of the United Nations (UN).

GFDD and Funglode Submit Written Statement during UN Post-2015 Talks Focused on Draft Sustainable Development Goals
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) were present last week during the 3rd session of the post-2015 Development Agenda Intergovernmental Negotiations: Goals and Targets (March 23-27, 2015) as divisions on how best to finalize a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs) moved to the fore. The meeting, which took place in New York, charged Member State delegates with hammering out a post-2015
development agenda.

Over 300 Students Will Participate in the Tenth Edition of the Dominican Republic Model United Nations Conference in New York
During the event, organized by the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR) with support from GFDD/Funglode between March 29 and April 2, youth will have the opportunity to participate in simulations of the United Nations General Assembly and vote on project resolutions from the seats occupied by the official representatives of the 193 Member States of this international organization.

GFDD Attends Closing Ceremony of CSW59 Confirming Brazil as Next Chair of CSW60
Following two weeks of negotiations and deliberations on the topic of gender equality (March 9-20, 2015), GFDD attended the closing ceremony of the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women which came to a head before a packed auditorium at UN Headquarters in New York. The session chaired by H.E. Kanda Vajrabhaya, former Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of The Kingdom of Thailand, led to the adoption of the draft report
of the Commission on its fifty-ninth session (E/CN.6/2015/L.4) and the election by acclamation of H.E. Ambassador Antonio de Aguiar Patriota, the Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, as the Chair of the 60th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

GFDD & Funglode Host Presentation of a Research Study on Elimination of Violence against Women in the Dominican Republic before a Packed UN Auditorium
The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations and the Dominican Political Observatory (OPD by its Spanish acronims) of Funglode, hosted on March 18 the presentation of a research study at the United Nations on The Elimination of Violence Against Women. The event, which was
organized in parallel to the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 59) was very well attended with close to 100 participants.

Panel Discussion on “Financing for Development Post-2015: The Growing Importance of Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for Developing Countries”
To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations (UN), the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) will host a panel discussion entitled “Financing for Development Post-2015: The Growing Importance of Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for Developing Countries”, at 3pm on Thursday, December 18th, 2014 at the UN Church Center.

The Dominican Film Showcase Closes Its Washington, D.C. Edition with Merengue and Bachata
The Dominican Film Showcase (DFS), an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), successfully ended last night with the presentation of the documentary film Sol Caribe, by filmmaker Félix Limardo. The diverse audience enjoyed a pleasant evening enlivened with the rhythms of Merengue, Bachata and Son, during the fifth and final day of film screenings that took place in Washington,
D.C., between November 19th and November 23rd.
