Special Screening of Film La Montaña for a Young Audience

June 20, 2014

As part of the initiative Dominican Film Showcase, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) will present the special screening of the inspirational Dominican film The Mountain (La Montaña), directed by Tabaré Blanchard and Iván Herrera. The event will take place next Monday, June 23rd, at the University Neighborhood Middle School at the Lower East Side, Manhattan.

The Mountain (La Montaña) is a
documentary drama about the first Caribbean expedition team to reach the summit of Mount Everest. A motivational film that captures Dominican mountaineers Iván Gómez, Federico Jovine and Karim Mella, on their way to plant the Dominican flag on the highest summit on Earth, inspires a new generation of adventurers in the most unexpected of places.

In May 2011, this unique expedition made history when they placed the Dominican flag on the highest mountain in the world. Their
amazing achievement inspired three young surfers, sons of fishermen in the coastal town of Nizao, to decide to scale the highest mountain in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean – Pico Duarte. This is the story that unites a naïve tale with an epic one, both inspirational and motivating as both groups set their sights on achieving the extraordinary. This is an adventure story that carries us from the sea to the sky and shows us that we all have a dream, a goal and a mountain to
climb.

About Dominican Film Showcase
The presence of the vibrant and dynamic Dominican community is well acknowledged in cities across the United States. Dominican culture, music, and traditions are quickly becoming household references but the country””s film industry remains relatively unknown. Global Foundation for Democracy and Development aims to change that by showcasing a sample of the best films produced recently in the Dominican
Republic, by Dominican filmmakers, about Dominican topics. To do this, GFDD is partnering with the Organization of American States, the Art Museum of the Americas, the Dominican Embassy in the US and the Dominican Mission to the Organization of American States.
