Questions Seeking to Send a Message to the World is Main Topic of Workshop Held in Collaboration with Human

The FUNGLODE-hosted workshop, “The Art of the Interview: Techniques for Establishing Good Dialogue in the Production of a Documentary,” introduced French filmmaker Yan Arthus-Bertrand’s new documentary Human as well as serving as a practical session wherein part of the film’s technical team explained to the audience about the methods they use in doing the film’s interviews and shared tips on how to
connect with their interview subjects.

Human is comprised exclusively of on-screen interviews in which men and women talk about themselves and their lives as their stories are interwoven with aerial images from different countries.

In the workshop, Emmanuel Cappellin and Hervé Kern also shared their personal and professional experiences of working on Human with young people, journalists, broadcasters and filmmakers in attendance.

Emmanuel Cappellin, assistant director and camera operator for the interview scenes in Human, studied environmental issues and international development at McGill University in Canada then later combined that with a film directing and production program at Berkeley Digital Film Institute (USA). As a result of combining these two professions, he decided to focus his documentaries on the crises and problems surrounding the environment.

Hervé
Kern is documentary film director and cameraman with a degree from the Louis Lumière Film School in Paris. He has made documentaries on homelessness and immigration. He has worked with Yann Arthus-Betrand on various projects and is currently involved in the production of Human.

During the practical part of the workshop, several participants came up onto the stage and were interviewed using the same techniques as the documentary. In fact, the exercise
was so successful that Cappellin and Kern decided to turn on their camera and film the interviews then add them to the filming being done for Human in the Dominican Republic.

The event ended with the 20-minute advance screening of Human, which showed part of the work already finished in some of the 45 countries the film project intends to cover.

The official launch of Human, as agreed by
Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Ban Ki Moon, will take place at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.

In recent weeks, GFDD along with its sister organization FUNGLODE, has been collaborating as a host organization for Human and in the management and coordination of the filming process in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
