Preparatory Meeting for Training Program on Environmental Conservation for Judges from Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in association with the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) in Washington, DC, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Escuela Nacional de Judicatura (National School of Judicial Studies) in the Dominican Republic, the Norman Manley Scool of Law in Jamaica,
and Konbit Pou Ayiti (KONPAY) in Haiti, organized a preparatory meeting for the pilot training program for judges from the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica on environmental conservation. Meeting sessions took place August 25-27, 2008 at FUNGLODE Headquarters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The initiative seeks to equip judicial professonals with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure that existing laws related to biodiversity protection, conservation management, forestry, land use, and pollution control are understood, implemented and maintained.
This session formed part of a three year program, funded by the John D. & Catherine T. Mac Arthur Foundation, which began January of this year and will continue until December 2020. During this period, the collaborating institutions will develop, test and adapt to each country curriculum pertinent to issues of environmental concern in the Region, in an effort to strengthen work being realized by local institutions in the area of
