About Luis Porto
Originally from Uruguay, Luis Porto is an economist, writer and professor. Since 2015 he has served as a Senior Advisor at the Organization of American States (OAS). Prior to his time at the OAS, Porto served in various capacities in the Uruguayan government including Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2015; Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Finance from 2011 to 2013 and President of the Corporación Nacional para el Desarrollo from 2010 to 2011.
About this Roundtable
Topic: In this version of the Global Roundtables series, Martinez and Porto spoke about the democratic and development challenges that the Latin America and the Caribbean region faces. Porto mentioned that the greatest difficulties are inequalities among the rich and poor and governments’ inability to respond to citizen needs. The OAS is working to combat these issues, but is limited it its capacity to force governments to comply.
The Senior Advisor at the OAS also shared personal experiences of working as a professor, in the private sector and under the leadership of former president of Uruguay, José Mujica.
