Leonel Fernández signs collaboration agreement with Emirates Policy Center

November 2, 2015

The agreement was made during Fernández’s participation in the Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate, held by the EPC on November 1st and 2nd. Dr. Fernández was one of the keynote speakers.

Dr. Leonel Fernández, president of GFDD/Funglode, represented the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) in an interinstitutional collaboration agreement with the Emirates Policy Center (EPC).

The agreement provides for
cooperation between Funglode and the EPC on field investigations, academic exchanges, and joint sponsorship of events promoting connections between Latin America and the Caribbean and the Arab Gulf states. Signing on behalf of the EPC was its president, Dr. Ebtesam Al-Ketbi.

Fernández, who is the former president of the Dominican Republic, also signed on behalf of the Council on Arab World Relations with Latin America and the Caribbean (CARLAC), an NGO aimed at strengthening relations between two emerging regions: the Arab
countries and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dr. Fernández was accompanied by Dr. Marco Herrera, executive director of Funglode; Mustafa Abu Nabaa, director of Middle East programs for Funglode; and former diplomat Hassan Rahman, executive director of CARLAC.

The EPC is the main public policy center in the UAE, with the mission to study the challenges and opportunities facing the Gulf countries in their accelerated process of globalization, as well as
the way these states will integrate into the future economy.

Among other actions, the EPC organizes the Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate, an event that brings together political, academic, and business leaders from around the world, with the aim of examining the future of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the UAE and their integration with several different regions, as well as debating general regional trends and the main challenges to development, security, and the fight against
terrorism.
