April 16, 2015

The strengthening of higher education, particularly with regard to the methodology of scientific research, is one of the biggest challenges that Latin America currently has, said the President of GFDD/Funglode, Dr. Leonel Fernández.

Fernández made the statement during a visit to Unicaribe College, an institution of higher education established in Florida by Dominican entrepreneurs with the aim of providing vocational training to Hispanics in the United
States.

According to the former president of the Dominican Republic, both the Dominican Republic and Latin America in general have serious deficiencies with respect to the field of scientific research methodology, so it is urgent to strengthen this area of higher education.

Likewise, the former head of the Dominican State advocated that in the systems of higher education in the region is given full freedom so each student can choose a career commensurate with their potential.

"Education
transcends the job," said Fernández, after advocating that higher education has a balanced mix between humanities and technical aspects.

Fernández noted that during his efforts of government, Dominican higher education made progress like never before, with the creation of a ministry for the area, the modernization of the headquarters of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD, by its Spanish acronym), the construction of eight regional universities,
scholarships to over 20 young people to study abroad, among other equally important actions.

Similarly, the former president acknowledge the fact that Unicaribe college has established a campus in the United States, saying that this will help to spread the culture and Dominican values in the Hispanic community based in this country.

As part of his visit, the board of Unicaribe College conferred the title of honorary professor to former President
Fernández, in recognition of his contributions to higher education and public life in the Dominican Republic.

After thanking the institution former President Fernandez stressed that he considers himself as "an academic given to politics", so he does not discard the possibility of returning to university classrooms to teach, as before reaching the Presidency of the Republic for the first time.

Unicaribe College was established on
January 24, 2007 and since then has carried out important activities in cultural, artistic and academic fields that benefit the Hispanic community in Florida.
