Leonel Fernández Receives Gold Medal from the University of Alcalá for His Contributions to Education
November 26, 2014
The former President of the Dominican Republic and President of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode), Leonel Fernández, will receive a gold medal from the University of Alcalá (UAH) this Thursday, in recognition of his contributions to education.
The Governing Council of the University of Alcalá thus recognizes Fernández’s work as President of the Dominican Republic in the field of education and in other areas.
The ceremony will be held in the Auditorium of the University of Alcalá, and it will be attended by the leading authorities of that legendary academic institution as well as by teachers, students, intellectuals, diplomats and other special guests.
Fernández will receive the gold medal from Dr. Fernando Galván, Rector of the University of Alcalá.
In turn, Dr. Carmen Figueroa, the University’s General Secretary, will read the document
in which the Governing Council of the academic institution orders the presentation of the recognition to the Dominican politician and academic.
The University of Alcalá maintains cooperation agreements with several institutions of higher education in the Dominican Republic, which include the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), the Catholic University of Santo Domingo (UCSD), Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE), the Pedro Enriquez Ureña National University
(UNPHU), Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), and the APEC University, among others.
This partnership has also translated into valuable initiatives, such as the 2006-2014 Graduate Scholarships for Dominican students, the most important and permanent program signed between the UAH and the Dominican government, as well as in the organization, along with other institutions, of the International Master’s degree in University Management (MIGU for
its acronym in Spanish).
Former President Fernández has a full work slate of several days in Europe, where he is fulfilling institutional commitments in Italy and in Spain.
