Leonel Calls for a World Order in Which Peace, Prosperity and Ecological Balance Prevail
January 10, 2018
The former President of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Leonel Fernández, called for the establishment of a new world order that is aligned with the main needs, concerns and aspirations of the inhabitants of the planet.
Fernández, who is also the President of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD/Funglode), desires a world where peace, solidarity, justice, equity and inclusion prevail, and which is prosperous and sustainable.
The former Dominican ruler made the above statement in the framework of the Conference that took place at the Inter-American Defense College on the world situation in 2018, under the title "A World in Transition: Geopolitical Perspective in a Time of Change." The presentation was attended by the College authorities,
Ambassadors to the OAS, heads of delegation and leaders of the Inter-American Defense Board, faculty and Master’s Degree students of graduating class 57 at that institution.
President Fernández was welcomed by Rear Admiral Martha Herb, Director of the Inter-American Defense College, and José Tomás Pérez, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States of America.
In his presentation, Fernández examined the great changes that humanity
has undergone since the Second World War, mainly after the end of the so-called Cold War, characterized by the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Fernández also discussed the interactions between the United States and Latin America, which gained a considerable momentum after the rapprochement with Cuba. On the other hand, he highlighted that the military budget of the United States is greater than the combined total of the eight successor countries, which indicates that we are
facing a situation of unipolarity in that area.
Fernández’s agenda in Washington, D.C. also included a working meeting at the World Resources Institute and a meeting with the Director of the Inter-American Defense Institute and members of the United States Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
