Landfill Harmonic, Winner of the GFN Award 2016, Hosted by DREFF

The winner of this year’s Green Film Network (GFN) Award – the Oscar of environmental filmmaking – has just been announced! Landfill Harmonic, the joint Uruguay/USA production directed by Brad Allgood and Graham Townsley, has been chosen from among 14 competing films representing various countries. DREFF is proud to be the first host of the annual Green Film Network (GFN) Award in the Americas. The film – screened during the opening
ceremony of DREFF 2015 – will again run during this year’s closing ceremony on September 18 in Santo Domingo.

Landfill Harmonic revolves around the Recycled Instruments Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan music group whose instruments have been entirely crafted from garbage collected from the open dump surrounding the neighborhood they live in. DREFF had the honor of opening its fifth edition in September 2015 with this documentary feature and
welcoming the young people who make up the orchestra, along with their director Favio Chávez, as guests of honor to receive the Festival’s Colibrí Award, recognizing their inspiring work that has touched the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

Each GFN member festival had the chance to present a film chosen from among the titles screened in their 2015 editions and produced in their own country, thereby showcasing the diversity and strength of
environmental documentaries from around the world. An international jury representing more than 20 countries chose the winning film.

The Green Film Network brings together some of the major environmental film festivals held annually around the globe. The network’s objective is to coordinate the events of the associated festivals, promote and distribute films worldwide, and encourage initiatives and projects that provoke viewers to ponder on the environment.
DREFF has been a member of GFN since 2015 alongside more than 30 major environmental film festivals around the world.

The 2015 GFN Green Award, hosted by the Ecozine Film Festival in Spain, went to Spanish director Nocem Collado for her film La mujer y el agua. In 2014 the host was FIFE from Paris, France, which presented the award for the documentary Amazon Gold, directed by Reuben Aaronson.
