InteRDom Connects with Universities at 2014 GIC Conference

The 2014 Global Internship Conference (GIC) served as the perfect platform for InteRDom representatives, who joined more than 300 international education professionals, educators, and researchers to discuss the current trends and topics surrounding the field of international internships and education abroad. Program representatives also formed new relationships with university representatives and industry professionals from across the US and abroad. The
conference’s theme, “Internships, Co-op, Experiential Education – Where Next?” set the tone for participants during the four-day conference, held in Toronto, Canada from June 10-13, 2014.

This year’s conference was hosted by the University of Toronto, in
partnership with the Academic Internships Council (AIC), and with academic support from Michigan State University. The 2014 edition had the largest attendance ever for the GIC, with 330 participating from 30 countries.

InteRDom representatives attended information sessions and panels on topics ranging from student’s personal branding to the role of international internships in university curriculum to ‘off the beaten path’ internships in
developing countries and how to effectively manage and market these experiences to students. The information gained from this conference will strengthen InteRDom’s services and programs and help us to continue providing the highest quality experience possible to future students.

One of the main highlights of the conference was the incredible networking component that allowed internship providers to meet with many universities interested in developing their
international internship programs on campus. The InteRDom program was received with enthusiasm by university representatives, and its presence was great exposure for the Dominican Republic as a professional destination for students. It was clear at the conference that InteRDom is the leading expert in international internships in the Dominican Republic, and future partnerships with new universities are on the horizon.

In addition to the networking and group sessions
provided at the conference, attendees were able to take advantage of a day-long excursion to Niagara Falls that included a tour guide and passage on the Hornblower Niagara Cruise, paired with an ice wine tasting at the famed Inniskillin Winery and a tour of the quaint town, Niagara-on-the-Lake, kindly organized by the conference hosts and partners.

The Global Internship Conference (GIC) aims to promote internships as an integral part of a student’s college
education. The scope of this conference attracts attendees from all over the world who seek to learn more about internships, academic work placement, co-operative education, teaching, and volunteering. As a platform for dialogue, and vehicle for action, the GIC brings together colleagues to discuss and advance best practices as well as develop and examine a research agenda for global internships and is a very important
forum for InteRDom. 

InteRDom, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important
topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
