GFDD to Showcase Projects and Programs at Santo Domingo’s XVII International Book Fair

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) are organizing various workshops, conferences and book presentations in partnership with the XVII International Book Fair in Santo Domingo, which commences on April 24 and continues through to May 5, 2014. This year the the Dominican Republic’s premier Book Fair is dedicated to writer Domingo Moreno Jimenes, “creator of postumismo” in the DR.

During the Fair, GFDD will be showcasing several of its initiatives including; Portal Dominicanaonline, ReCreate, Eco-Huertos, and Environment focused short films, at Plaza de Cultura in Santo Domingo. All events are free and open to the public between the hours of 8:00 am — 10:00 pm.  GFDD organized events are as follows:

Thursday, 25 April, 2014 @ 10:30 a.m.
Educational Screening of GFDD-Produced Short Film: “The Growth of Lake Enriquillo: Environmental, Social and Scientific Implications.”

The objective of the screening is to review and present recent research conducted to determine why Lake Enriquillo has been growing and to address the environmental, social and scientific implications of its growth. The morning session will involve a briefing of recent findings related to the current status of the Lake, which has risen 11.5 meters since 2003 and will suggest action plans aimed at mitigating the negative causal effects of the lake’s expansion.

Dominicanaonline.org is the web portal for the Dominican Republic. Created in 2005 the website responds to the interests and informational needs of Dominicans in the homeland and abroad, and seeks to positively contribute to the international visibility of the nation. It constitutes the first initiative to compile accurate and relevant information from and about the Dominican Republic in a single site. The
website offers information on a wide range of topics related to the geography, history, economy, education, culture and ecology of the Dominican Republic.

Educational session with a short film program to be presented includes; GFDD’s self-produced 17 minute short, Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience
(¿Basura o recurso? Experiencia de la República Dominicana);
Following the screening, a practical education initiative and workshops in art recycling workshop by ReCrearte Coordinator, Bertha Santana. (Organizers: Formative Activities/GFDD)

Recycling is about finding an alternative and transforming used materials into new objects, which would otherwise be discarded as garbage. Within art, recycling is a new means of expression, which many artists
have embraced as a way to give something back to the environment, inspired on what they know how to do best. Join this workshop in a demonstration of how to take advantage of the things you are about to throw away, transforming them into new useful objects for the home.

Short film screening: “Salga el mal y entre el bien- Liborio Mateo, la historia”,
with the participation of Dr. Sobieski De Leon, historian and expert on the Liborista culture.

Liborio Mateo Ledesma, marked the social, political and religious history of San Juan de la Maguana in the 20th century. More than a leader, he was considered by many a religious figure, from which the term Liborismo emerged. Was he a healer or a fighter? A hundred years on it still remains a controversy for Sanjuaneros and
Dominicans alike.

Discussion “Encouraging the development of sustainable gardens in the Dominican Republic ” by Cristiana Cruz Minier, Coordinator of the EcoHuertos Program

The EcoHuertos program, an initiative which arose from the I DR Environmental Film Festival (I DREFF), promotes the development of organic
