GFDD Program ReCrearte Celebrated a Recycled Art Workshop at the Dominican Republic Consulate in New York

ReCrearte program, an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), successfully held a recycled art workshop on Thursday 26th at the Dominican Republic Consulate headquarters in New York City, were Bertha Santana, ReCrearte program coordinator, spoke to approximately 35 people.

Ms. Monica Diaz-Lockhart, of the Dominican Republic Consulate, welcomed the attendees and presented the
General Consulof the Dominican Republic, Mr. Luis Lithgow.

In his opening remarks Mr. Lithgow thanked GFDD for thinking of the Consulate to support them in the realization of this important workshop, where Dominicans had the opportunity to learn to use recycled material to create beautiful art pieces. He stressed the interest of the Consulate to continue offering workshops that benefits the community, empowering men and women with tools that allow them to have a new source of income.

Yamile Eusebio, Director
of GFDD office in New York, thanked the Consulate for their support in celebrating this workshop at their facility, since it is an opportunity to share with the Dominican community in New York, and also to offer a successful workshop established for more than two years throughout the Dominican Republic, that has benefited more than 1,600 people.

On this occasion, Bertha Santana showed participants how to create purses with blouses and
rugs, necklaces and hair decorations with pieces of fabric.

ReCrearte Program aims to raise awareness of the 3Rs of solid waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle. The workshops also emphasize and demonstrate how recycling waste into art can empower individuals and communities alike. Through this program, GFDD hopes to engage youth groups, educators and women””””s associations to reformulate the way they think about trash and plastic pollution issue.
