July 8, 2015

GFDD/Funglode is excited to announce the launch of the Fellows Program Publication, “Capacidad Local para Beneficiarse de la Globalización y Aumentar el Empleo: el Caso de la Republica Dominicana” [Local Capacity to Benefit from Globalization and Increase Employment: The Case of the Dominican Republic]. The launch will take place on July 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Funglode Auditorium in the Dominican Republic. The author, fellow José
Caraballo-Cueto, and several speakers will be on hand for a Q & A session after the presentation. The contents of this publication were presented by the author at a panel discussion on October 17, 2013, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, at the UN headquarters in New York City. The panel follows his participation in the GFDD/FUNGLODE Fellows Program, from summer 2012.

During the Q&A section, Frederic Emam-Zadé, Senior Economist, and Fátima
Portorreal, outstanding academic and social anthropological studies consultant will also be on hand for comments.

This publication was written by José G. Caraballo-Cueto, a GFDD/Funglode Fellows Program researcher. It examines unemployment, foreign investment, and trade balance trends in the Dominican Republic and their effect on GDP growth and the Dominican Republic’s participation in the global economy. It analyzes the factors behind the Dominican
Republic’s annual GDP growth rates and calls on the government to promote entrepreneurship and the creation of more small and medium sized local businesses to increase production and exports, create jobs, and reduce price levels, thereby encouraging re-investment in the local economy.

This book is part of GFDD´s series RESEARCH AND IDEAS, which includes research papers, articles, speeches, and keynote addresses that discuss critical issues of the contemporary
world from national, regional, and global points of view. “We hope they will contribute to a better understanding of the world, empowering readers to act in more informed, efficient, and harmonious ways,” says Natasha Despotovic, Executive Director of GFDD.

José G. Caraballo-Cueto holds a Ph.D. in Economics from The New School for Social Research, with a specialization in the areas of Economic Development and International Trade. Mr. Cueto has had
extensive experience teaching both micro and macroeconomics at Berkley College and has also worked as a research associate at the Center of Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College, a division of the City University of New York (CUNY). Mr. Cueto participated in the GFDD/FUNGLODE Fellows Program in the summer of 2012. Through his association with the program, Mr. Cueto had the opportunity to connect with other professionals conducting work on similar topics.
