December 8, 2009

On December 1, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and the Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI), in coordination with the United States Embassy’s Franklin Center and Centro Universitario Regional de Nagua, presented the first of a series of cineforums that will be celebrated during 2010.

The inauguration of this program was celebrated at Centro
Universitario Regional de Nagua (CURNA) in commemoration of World AIDS Day. The event featured the screening of the film Philadelphia, which highlights the life of a young lawyer that embarks on a battle over rights after having been let-go by his employer after it has been discovered that he has been diagnosed with AIDS.

The screening was followed by a conversatorium on HIV led by the Director of the United States Center for Disease Control and
Prevention, Samuel Martínez. Robin Busse of the Franklin Center, Taina Rodriguez of FUNGLODE and Julián Guzmán, Director of the Office of the Ministry of Culture in Nagua, also partook in the event.

GFDD, FUNGLODE and the Franklin Center will continue to organize cineforums on various topics throughout the year in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Nagua and Puerto Plata.
