GFDD Convened Civil Society Organizations as part of the OAS General Assembly Events in Washington, DC

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), as a non-governmental organization accredited to the Organization of American States (OAS) and within the framework of a collaborative agreement between both institutions, convened civil society organizations of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Western Hemisphere to discuss the future of the Americas.

The activity, organized in partnership with the Section of Relations with Civil Society,
Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity of the OAS, was a side event part of the program of the General Assembly of the OAS, held in Washington, DC, June 3-5, 2018.

More than a dozen organizations representing civil society of more than 10 countries of the region, got together at GFDD-DC’s office and participated on a dialogue
called “Let’s Talk about the Future of the Americas!”. Maria Victoria Abreu, GFDD’s International Affairs and Socio-Economic Development Program Manager, moderated the discussion, which also had the participation of Semiramis de Miranda, GFDD’s ICT and Projects Director, H.E. Edward Anibal Pérez Reyes, Ambassador, Alternate Representative, and Mr. Francisco Cruz, Counselor, Alternate Representative, from the Permanent Mission of the
Dominican Republic to the OAS.

“We need to work more and better together as civil society organizations of the hemisphere, both within and beyond the OAS”, was one of the main conclusions of the meeting. In addition, participants agreed on the importance of involving the Embassies and Permanent Missions to the OAS in their efforts as civil society, and also on the need of improving the mechanisms used for dialogue and discussions.

GFDD was present at the 48th General Assembly of the OAS, hosted at the organization’s headquarters in Washington, DC, attending several of its plenary sessions and parallel events.
