GFDD awarded status of UNEP accredited civil society organization

May 12, 2014

On Monday May 12, 2014, GFDD received official confirmation from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) that it is now an officially accredited member of UNEP’s Governing bodies, such as the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) of UNEP and its subsidiary bodies.

Accreditation is the main entry point for Major Groups and Stakeholders, such as GFDD, into environmental policy dialogue at UNEP. In the process leading up to sessions of
the United Nations Environmental Assembly of UNEP, GFDD will have the possibility to:

  • Participate in the Regional Consultation Meeting to be held in its region (usually in October/November every year);
  • Participate in the elaboration of Regional Civil Society Statements that will form the basis for drafting a Global Civil Society Statement containing recommendations to UNEP, Governments, etc. to be circulated during the
    UNEA;
  • Submit to the UNEP Secretariat written contributions to unedited working documents of the United Nations Environment Assembly of UNEP for distribution to the Governments through the Committee of the Permanent Representatives (CPR);
  • During the session of the UNEA to circulate written statements to Governments, in the form of information documents through the UNEP secretariat.

The accreditation represents a
significant milestone for GFDD as this will enable it to further strengthen its collaborative relationship with the United Nations (GFDD is already an accredited organization with observer status at ECOSOC and has special relations with the Department of Public Information (DPI), the UN Global Compact Office, the Office on Drugs and Crime, and the World Summit on Information) while disseminating the work of its environment programs such as ReCrearte (local workshops teaching local communities the importance and economic value of recycling waste into tangible artistic products) into tangible, EcoHuertos (local workshops teaching school children the importance of school gardens)  the DREFF (GFDD’s annual environmental film festival based in 8 sites across
the country).

About UNEP:
UNEP has the objective of providing leadership and encouraging partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
