GFDD and FUNGLODE Will Support Inter-Regional Forum of Cities on Public Policy and Drug Treatment

April 10, 2008
GFDD and FUNGLODE aided in organizing the Inter-Regional Forum of Cities on Public Policy and Drug Treatment, financed by the European Union and coordinated by the Organization of American States’ Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission. The event was celebrated April 2-5, 2008, at the Hotel Jaragua in Santo Domingo.

The objectives of the activity were to: exchange experiences and best practices;
improve policy-making capacity in order to enhance existing policy in order to expand access to drug treatment and rehabilitation programs; facilitate the creation of a network of alliances between Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean institutions; and raise awareness amongst public prosecutors and family judges of the drug dependency treatment and rehabilitation programs available as alternatives to incarceration. Program organizers expect that the initiative will lead to better
informed policy decisions, the advancement and application of assessment methodologies, and the development of treatment protocols and informative materials in both English and Spanish. Numerous health care professionals, city officials and judicial system representatives were present at the event.

Through their contributions to the organization of this event, GFDD and FUNGLODE support the Organization of American States’
work to increase economic equity and further social inclusion.

Both non-profit organizations support and promote the objectives of the OAS and are active members of the OAS’s Civil Society, a community of non-governmental organizations that supports the multilateral institution in the realization of its summits.
