GFDD and FUNGLODE Publications Start to Go Global

November 30, 2011

GFDD and FUNGLODE are honored to announce the second revised edition of the New Perspectives: Dominican Republic photo book. The new edition, which came out in September has been registered under the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) system, which is a unique numeric commercial book identifier system, making the publication accessible to a wider audience.

The New
Perspectives:Dominican Republic photo book is the brainchild of its Editor-in Chief, Natasha Despotovic and presents over 400 aerial images by photographer Anne Casale.   Ms. Despotovic first conceived of the idea while taking a domestic flight within the DR and noticing how the topography and the scenery passing below formed an ever-changing tapestry of colors & textures despite the short distance traveled.  She discussed her ideas with Ms.Casale and soon
thereafter the book became a reality.

Since its first edition in 2007, New Perspectives: Dominican Republic has given readers an indispensable and fascinating window into the rich cultural, geographic and historic diversity of the DR.  It has quickly became an integral part of GFDD and FUNGLODE’s joint mission to promote an understanding
and appreciation of the Dominican culture, values and heritage and by its very creation has presented little known facets of the country’s diverse landscapes and micro-climates.  The same images have served as the basis for a popular and successful traveling photo exhibit which to date has been seen by audiences in the DR, Europe and the Americas.

Until recently the book had been sold on a limited basis at GFDD and FUNGLODE events —
including at the photo exhibits.  Recently, however, it has been made more widely available and can now be found in bookshops throughout the Dominican Republic, including Libreria Cuesta, Britt Shop Dominicana and Jumbo Luperon. In the last 10 weeks alone, the book has sold 253 copies and there are initial plans to increase global wholesale distribution of the book to 77 more retailers in Mexico, Peru, Chile Costa Rica, the USA, Antigua and Barbuda and Curacao.

Another GFDD publication, the first-ever Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment, launched in July 2011, has also had similar success in the same outlets as New Perspectives in addition to the  Dominican Ministry of the Environment and Libros de Barlovento in Puerto Rico. An English version  of the Dictionary which can reach a broader and more varied audience is aimed for release towards the end of this year.

Plans for an online store and to
sell GFDD publications on mass-market online sites –including ones like Amazon, are currently also underway.
