GFDD and FUNGLODE Partner with Voluntariado Banreservas to Launch the Exhibit “Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment”

August 1, 2012

On Monday, July 30, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), partnered with Voluntariado Banreservas to put on the exhibit “Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment.”

Through the initiative, the young people participating in the camp organized by Voluntariado Banreservas were able to learn more about the environment and natural resources of the Dominican
Republic.

The exhibit “Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment” displays graphics and scientific information from the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment, a reference book published by Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE). The encyclopedic dictionary offers basic knowledge to young readers on the environment and
conservation methods, planting the seeds of life-long learning and environmental responsibility.

The encyclopedic dictionary masterfully unites information on the environment and natural resources of the Dominican Republic. The volume incorporates information from a wide range of disciplines, including chemistry, physics, geology, biology,
atmospheric engineering, earth and soil sciences, geography, demography, economics and law.

The Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment is divided into three main sections – scientific articles; definitions of terms and concepts; and a resource guide containing a map of national protected areas, a directory of environmental organizations and government agencies and a list of endemic flora and fauna. Featuring an incredible
712 defined environmental terms, 58 table sets, 123 graphics, 19 scientific articles and over 900 photographs, the volume is sure to serve as an important reference for generations of students, environmentalists and concerned citizens.

23 images are currently on display.

The exposition is the result of an extensive partnership and agreement of collaboration between Banreservas and the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), which
includes a vast program of activities, including film projections, exhibits and discussion forums. During the inauguration of the exhibit this past Monday, Mr. Osvaldo Larancuent, Director of Electronic Services and Member of the Banreservas Environment Committee, spoke to the youth participants of the Banreservas summer camp of the diverse initiatives being realized by the Volantariado Banreservas to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation.

GFDD
and FUNGLODE were represented at the event by Yamile Eusebio, Director of the GFDD New York Office and Director of Educational and Formative Activities at FUNGLODE.  The inauguration also featured the participation of Banreservas executives Orión Mejía, Flor Migdalia Franjul and Alicia Collado; Ernesto Reyna Alcántara, Minster of the Environment; Jean Paul Quiróz of Seguros Banreservas; Jesusita Alcántara and Juan José Portorreal of Cooperativa Banreservas; Rubén Torres, Marine
Biologist; and Luis Piantini, producer of the documentary film Lago Enriquillo.

Starting Thursday, August 2, the exhibit will be on display at the Club Banreservas in Santiago.
