GFDD and FUNGLODE Participate in the Discover POP Tourism Fair

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institution in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), participated in the Discover POP Tourism Fair (Discover Puerto Plata), organized by Cluster del Destino Puerto Plata (Cluster Destination Puerto Plata).
GFDD and FUNGLODE had a booth at the fair, which showcased promotional
materials on GFDD and FUNGLODE programs and the foundations’ publications. GFDD and FUNGLODE also coordinated the conference “Competitive Security Management for Tourism Destinations and Business,” presented by Luis Grunewald, Director of the Department of Tourism Security at Fundación Turismo para Todos (Tourism for Everyone Foundation) in Argentina. Grunewald works in the Secretary of Tourism of Argentina with tourism security programs and tourism and
hospitality development training programs.
The Discover POP Tourism Fair was celebrated at Ocean World from October 19-21, and involved the participation of wholesalers and tourism operators from countries around the world, national agents and local suppliers.
The trade show, organized by the Tourism Cluster Destination Puerto Plata, in coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and the hotel sector.
GFDD and FUNGLODE were pleased to
form part of this event aimed at promoting the Dominican Republic as a tourism destination.

and concern for the country’s natural resources, their protection and sustainable use.
El Metro and the Impacts of the Transportation System Integration in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, by Carl Allen, GFDD/FUNGLODE Fellow and graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School Master’s Program in Public Policy and Urban Planning, is an evaluation of the potential impact of the
transportation system on poverty alleviation, congestion, pollution reduction and social and economic development. The outcome of his research is an extensive report on the effects of the metro and feeder bus routes on the nation’s urban development, which includes recommendations for maximizing societal benefits.
Distance Education Challenges, by Heitor Gurgulino de Souza, Secretary
General of the International Association of Universities and President of Virtual Educa Brazil, calls attention to the expansion of distance education programs, and the important role of distance education in the future of growth of higher education worldwide. Gurgulino de Souza identifies innovative technologies that will transform higher education in the coming years, and emphasizes the critical value of teacher training and quality assurance in distance education development. The
analysis also refers to the important findings published in the recent report of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which recognizes the essential link between pay scales for educators and quality of higher education.
