ages of 22 and 29. A National Evaluation Committee comprised of Dominican filmmakers, sociologists, film critics and creators of art and culture then evaluated scholarship candidates based on their artistic ability and creative potential, in addition to previous work experience.

Martha Checo, EICTV Representative to the Dominican Republic, and Omar de la Cruz, Director of the GFDD/FUNGLODE Audiovisual Department, affirmed following the National Evaluation
Committee’s submission of selected candidates, the EICTV Selection Committee has selected Carlos Ortíz, who will be specializing in directing. Ortíz will complete a three-year degree program during the period of 2009-2012.

Awarding scholarships forms part of the agreement signed by EICTV and GFDD and FUNGLODE in December 2006, establishing the three institutions’ shared commitment to realizing collaborative training and capacity
building programs. As a result of the agreement, GFDD and FUNGLODE’s Global Media Arts Institute has been offering classes and workshops on film and television production, in association with EICTV, since February, 2006.

EICTV is a creation of Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (Foundation for New Latin American Film), based in Havana, Cuba. The school was inaugurated in December, 1986, by the Latin American Film Makers Committee, which has been
headed by acclaimed Columbian writer, Gabriel García Marquéz, since its inception.

Dominican Filmmaker, Tanya Valette, is both a member of EICTV’s first graduating class and the academic institution’s current General Director.

The Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión is the only school in the world to have received the Cannes Film Festival’s distinguished Roberto Rossellini Award,
which recognizes outstanding achievement in the areas of progress, generosity and humanity.

GMAI is dedicated to providing up-in-coming professionals in the television and film industry with comprehensive instruction in the latest trends in audiovisual production, as part of its overall mission to expand the multimedia industry of the Dominican Republic. The Institute seeks to play a key role in the development of a highly qualified Dominican audiovisual industry that
significantly contributes to the economic development, competitiveness and modernization of the nation.
