Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) signed an agreement of academic cooperation on Friday with the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies (IEEE), an agency of the Spanish Center for Advanced Studies on National Defense, of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, to exchange knowledge on issues of security and defense.

The agreement was signed by the former President of the Dominican Republic and President of FUNGLODE, Dr. Leonel Fernández, and
the Director General of the IEEE, Miguel Ángel Ballesteros Martín, in the framework of a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Spanish agency.

According to the terms of the agreement, the interagency cooperation will take place mainly in the areas of research and analysis in order for both agencies to develop activities of that nature that contribute to the fulfillment of their objectives.

Among the activities included in the agreement are the development of an annual joint research on issues of mutual interest, the exchange of lecturers and panelists for the outreach activities that both agencies carry out, the development and publication of joint projects, the continuing exchange of publications between their libraries, and the organization of seminars, workshops and roundtables.

The agreement
provides that, for each of the activities to be developed under the agreement, both agencies must designate a scholar or researcher to be responsible for coordinating the preparation and implementation of the programs. The agreement will remain in force for three years.

In terms of training, work should be conducted in specific areas such as international relations, the impact of technology on security and defense, the performance of studies and analysis on security and
defense in the political and strategic fields, lessons learned from peacekeeping and multinational operations, and the role of international organizations such as the United Nations among others.

After signing the agreement, General Miguel Ángel Ballesteros Martín introduced former President Fernández to the main IEEE units, including the library, the conference hall, the classrooms and the meeting rooms.
