Leonel Fernández Elected President of the World Federation of United Nations
Former President of the Dominican Republic and President of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD/Funglode) Leonel Fernández was elected President of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). The election of Fernández as president of the organization took place at the 42nd WFUNA Plenary Assembly at the Dreams Palm Beach Punta Cana Hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

1st Ever Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018 was a Grand Success!
Dozens of international experts, including Heads of States, Ministers of Foreign Relations and senior representatives from regional organizations and leading think-tanks held conversations and analyzed the role of Latin America and the Caribbean at the 1st Global Forum on Latin America and the Caribbean 2018 in New York City. The two-day-long event was held at the Union League Club of Manhattan and was led by GFDD President Leonel Fernández, who gave several keynote speeches and participated in high-level panel discussions.

DREFF Joins 37 Festivals in First International Forum of Environmental Film Festivals
Director of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), Natasha Despotovic attended CineEco’s First International Forum of Environmental Film Festivals in Seia, Portugal. Over several days, Despotovic and leaders of 37 other film festivals gathered to meet, network and exchange ideas to better use resources and foster collaboration among environmental film festivals.

XI Dominican Book Fair Features Conferences, Book Launches
GFDD facilitated a number of activities at the XI Dominican Book Fair, where Dominican authors and readers came together to share in their love of literature. Among the events led by GFDD were a workshop on food journalism, a discussion on Dominican cuisine and several book launches with Dominican authors.

70th Anniversaries of CoNGO and UDHR Celebrated with Musical Performance
In celebration of the 70th anniversaries of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO) and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) a musical performance was held at the Salvation Army Auditorium in New York City. The concert featured performance from the musical duo of Molly Carr and Anna Petrova.

12th Annual Golf Tournament in New York
More than 100 players participated in the 12th Annual Golf Tournament at the Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, NY. The president of GFDD, Dr. Leonel Fernández headed the tournament, which supports the organization’s various programs and activities.

Special Screening of “Hay un país en el mundo” Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month
In collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Ministry of Culture and Banco BHD León, the film “Hay un país en el mundo” was screened at the IDB headquarters in Washington. The film celebrates Dominican culture and heritage and was a tribute to Hispanic Heritage month in the United States.

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN?
14th International Conference of the Americas in Punta Cana
The United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (ANU-RD), GFDD/Funglode and the Globalmuners Mexican Civil Association inaugurated the 14th edition of the International Conference of the Americas (CILA 2018) in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The CILA is a youth meeting where participants simulate United Nations commissions and other international institutions to debate and discuss issues of international importance.

In commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25), GFDD will be hosting a special event at its Washington, DC office. The Dominican short film "Un Acto de Rebeldía al Día" (A Rebellious Act a Day) will be screened, followed by a panel discussion with international experts and representatives of the film. This short film is the first one of a series of short stories aimed at bringing the issue of violence against women at everyday situations to the public agenda in the Dominican Republic. The series also promotes women‘s empowerment through art.
