GFDD Elected to Vice Chair of United Nations NGO Executive Committee on Financing for Development
In recognition of GFDD’s efforts in the areas of Financing for Development (FfD), the institution was elected to the United Nations NGO Executive Committee on FfD by unanimous vote on June 7, 2017 for a two-year term. The new role will provide an opportunity to network and dialogue at the UN with those working on FfD issues and collaborate with the global network of FfD organizations.

InteRDom Summer 2017 Interns Immersed in Their Dominican Experience
The InteRDom 2017 summer session began on June 5th at Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) facilities in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The 2017 InteRDom summer session cohort includes students from Baruch College and John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, as well as Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama.

International Conference on Novel Diagnostics & Affordable Treatment: Advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health & Well-being)
GFDD partnered with the United Nations Association of the United States of America Council of Organizations (UNA USA COO) and the Institute for Life Sciences Collaboration to host an International Conference on Novel Diagnostics & Affordable Treatment. The event, titled “Advancing UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health & Well-being”,) took place at the UN Church Center and was a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with a diverse panel of speakers that included high level representatives from the World Health Organization, the World Bank and several medical practitioners. They discussed a wide range of ongoing public health issues in developing countries, from tropical virus outbreaks and their interrelation with climate change, to the prevalence of pandemics such as tuberculosis or rabies, offering effective yet affordable solutions to help tackle them.

Dominican Leaders Visit the GFDD Offices in Washington DC to Discuss the Environment and Sustainable Development
A group of 50 Dominican leaders participated in an event organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) as part of the Dominican Embassy in the United States’ Leaders Program in Washington, DC. The group participated in a screening of the GFDD award-winning film “Value of Life”, and in a subsequent discussion about the environment, sustainable development and environmental film. The conversation was led by Claudia de Windt, Senior Legal Specialist at the Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States (OAS) and Maryanne Culpepper, Executive Director of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital, alongside Semiramis de Miranda, GFDD’s Projects and ICT Director.

GFDD/Funglode President Presents Certificates to Global Dominican Academic Exchange (GDAE) Participants
The group of Dominican students that participated in the last Global Dominican Academic Exchange (GDAE) at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) from April 9 to 16, 2017 received their participation certificates from Dr. Leonel Fernández on May 25th. Also present at the event, which was held at Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) headquarters in Santo Domingo, were Marco Herrera, executive director of Funglode; Yamile Eusebio, acting co-executive director of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD); Rocío Billini, director of academic exchanges at UASD, and Tomiris Silfa, assistant administrator for academic exchanges at UASD.

We Celebrated International Recycling Day with a ReCrearte Exposition and a Discussion About Waste Management in the Dominican Republic
Decorative objects, garments and educational murals made up part of the exposition at Funglode´s headquarters that included student creations from Recrearte program workshops throughout the country. The Fundación Propagás and the Dominican Republic Institute for Environmental Law (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish) supported the project organized by GFDD/Funglode. The Center for Agricultural and Forest Development (CEDAF, for its acronym in Spanish) also joined the celebration with a presentation.

The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), will co-host the screening of several short films and documentaries at the 2017 XII Festival Internacional de Cine Infantil (FICI), an annual event organized by the Vice-presidency of the Dominican Republic and its Biblioteca Infantil y Juvenil de la República Dominicana (BIJRD). DREFF's role in this event is to raise awareness on the importance of taking care of the environment and our planet with interesting films targeted at children and discussions with experts. BIJRD has been a DREFF friend and partner for several years.

The festival’s main objective is to inform New York City audiences about Dominican cinema and its relation to the history, politics and social life of the country through an aesthetic approach. The festival’s program will showcase an array of works reflecting the city’s diverse population including a large ratio of Latinos from 21 countries.

Funglode and GFDD, in partnership with Academic Council on the United Nations System and the UN Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR), will co-host a workshop on international organizations this August.
The theme of the workshop is reforming multilateral institutions, delivering improved governance.
Through presentations by young scholars and UN practitioners, case studies, guided research and special lectures geared towards post-graduate level professionals, this workshop will encourage participants to improve their own skills to engage at different stages in the complex area of scholarship and practice that is contemporary global peace operations.
The session is geared towards senior doctoral students, junior faculty members, representatives of international organizations, government agencies, and nongovernmental organizations working in the field of international relations and international law.
