GFDD and OAS Renew Agreement to Strengthen Democracy in the Americas

The Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD/Funglode) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have renewed their collaboration agreement. During his meeting with OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, Dr. Leonel Fernández, head of GFDD/Funglode and former president of the Dominican Republic, emphasized that "More than a decade after signing this agreement, renewing it today means that our commitment to those values and principles that will make the entire region of Latin America and the Western Hemisphere one where there can be peaceful coexistence and democratic relationship between our peoples is even greater.”

GFDD/Funglode Attends 2017 UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

GFDD and Funglode participated in the 2017 High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), held under the theme of “Eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity in a changing world.” Over the course of two weeks, the HLPF reflected on experiences and lessons learned during the last year of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) implementation. In its capacity as a member of the Non-Governmental Organization Major Group (NGO MG) of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, GFDD/Funglode co-signed, together with 148 other NGOs, the official NGO MG Position Paper for the HLPF 2017 which was delivered during the conference. The paper expresses the common views of civil society regarding the theme of this year’s Forum.

GFDD Global Roundtable with Ambassador Marco Albuja

To mark the latest edition of the GFDD Global Roundtables, the organization hosted Ambassador Marco Albuja, Ecuador’s permanent representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). The session, which took place in the Washington D.C. offices of GFDD, focused on many issues including the financial crisis, the movement of labor to the U.S., the civic revolution initiated by the former President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, environmental governance reforms, peace, security, and the recent election of President Lenín Moreno.

Domestic and international experts convened at Funglode headquarters to discuss new trends in sustainable tourism. They assured that the key for development is in utilizing both natural and cultural resources within the country to improve the industry and attract mindful tourists, thereby adding value in services. Reflections such as this were shared in the discussion on “New trends in responsible tourism – A comprehensive look at emerging opportunities in sustainable tourism,” organized by the Global Foundation for Democracy & Development (GFDD) through its Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and sister organization in the Dominican Republic, Funglode.

GFDD’s Value of Life to Screen at Cinema Los Angeles and KLEFF 2017 along with Cycles

Value of Life and CyclesValue of Life, a production of the Global Foundation for Democracy & Development (GFDD/Funglode), has been pre-selected to compete in the 2018 Cinema Los Angeles Film Festival and will screen at the 2017 Kuala Lumpur Eco Film Festival. Having been screened across the Dominican Republic and competed in six film festivals in locales ranging from New York and Turin, Italy to Ensenada, Mexico, Value of Life continues to travel around the world. Cycles, the 2016 winner of the Globo Verde Dominicano Short Film Award has also been chosen to screen at KLEFF 2017. Ciclos, which has premiered in the Dominican Republic and the United States, has only just begun its world travels.

Taking InteRDom Interns to the Dunes and Salt Mines of Baní

Become an InteRDom InternThe Summer 2017 InteRDom interns took part in their program’s third and final cultural activity; having the opportunity on Saturday, August 5th to enjoy a full day in the municipality of Baní, where they visited a number of truly picturesque landscapes. The day brought adventure in the form of climbing the Dunes of Baní, historical lessons in visiting the Salt Mines of Baní, and later, rest and relaxation during a swim in the Playa Salinas. At the beginning of June, the Summer 2017 InteRDom program brought three students from universities in the United States to Santo Domingo. The students not only worked as interns in diverse organizations, but also went on cultural excursions and participated in weekly activities held in the headquarters of Funglode.

GFDD Golf Tournament in New York

The Global Foundation for Democracy & Development is proud to announce its 10th Golf Tournament. This tournament will take participants to one of the finest country clubs on Long Island, which boasts over 160 acres of pristine fairways, treacherous bunkers, and state-of-the-art facilities. The day’s activities will include brunch, quality time on the driving range, 18 holes of golf, presentation of awards to the day’s top competitors, and a luxurious dinner banquet.
