Welcome again to our bi-monthly Newsletter. So much has happened in the last two months. GFDD has reached new heights and transversed new distances.
In lead up to the highly anticipated 2012 elections in the Dominican Republic, GFDD joined forces with the Inter-American Dialogue and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic to present the panel discussion, "Elections in the Dominican Republic: Where is the Country Headed?," featuring timely analysis by speakers: Eduardo A. Gamarra, Rosario Espinal and Bernardo Vega.

SPOTLIGHT ON The Dominican Women's Development Center |

As part of its mission to promote professional and educational advancement and sustainability within the Dominican community, the June-July 2012 Newsletter will spotlight the Dominican Women's Development Center (DWDC). The Center is a non-profit located in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Founded in 1988, the center works to help women and their families face challenges associated with sexism and discrimination, high housing costs, low-achieving schools, high dropout rates, limited access to health care services, attacks on reproductive rights, high teenage pregnancy, and high poverty rates.
DWDC runs programs that foster self-sufficiency, educational advancement and professional training. The Center realizes work in five critical areas: educational development, early childhood education, anti-domestic violence services and advocacy, community organizing and healthy living.
Some of DWDC's core programs include: the Educational Development Program, the Personal Development Program, the Economic Development Program, Spanish Literacy, English as a Second Language Instruction, The Mama Tingo Early Childhood Education Center, the Families in Action and Rising Program and the Families General Preventative Programs.
We wish DWDC continued success with their work with the Dominican community in New York City!

Photo Exhibit "New Perspectives: Dominican Republic" at Primary School 24 in Brooklyn
Brooklyn, June 4-13, 2012
GFDD will bring its acclaimed photography exhibit "New Perspectives: Dominican Republic" to the Primary School 24 Dual Language School for International Studies in Brooklyn, New York, presenting an exciting opportunity for the Foundation to connect with New York City public schools.
The exposition is free and open to the public.
Dates: June 4-13, 2012
Time: 4 pm - 6 pm, Monday - Thursday

Panel on Environmental Education Tool, Ocean in Google Earth, at Rio + 20
Rio de Janiero, June 17, 2012
GFDD is partnering with Ocean in Google Earth and Mission Blue to present the panel: "'Ocean in Google Earth' as an Environmental Education Tool: The Dominican Perspective," during the Rio + 20 Conference in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. The initiative will present how Ocean in Google Earth is being effectively used to raise awareness and provide information on coastal and marine resources, using the Dominican Republic as a model for the Caribbean and Latin American region.
The panel discussion will take place on 17 June, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the Rio Centro in room T-9, Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Read more > |

Twelfth GFDD Global Roundtable with Oceanographer, Fabien Cousteau

The twelfth edition of The GFDD Global Roundtable will feature discussion with Oceanographer and Founder and Executive Director of Plant A Fish, Fabien Cousteau. Plant A Fish (PAF) is a non-profit institution dedicated to "replanting" aquatic species of animals and plants in environmentally stressed areas around the world. Fabien Cousteau will speak about the work of this innovative organization, and where the world stands in terms of achieving Millennium Development Goal #7: Environmental sustainability. |

GFDD Dominican Get-Together Will Present Evening of Dominican Folkloric Music and Culture with Singer, Songwriter and Dominican Folk Music Researcher Irka Mateo
New York, July 5, 2012
GFDD's Dominican Get-Togethers will present an evening of Dominican folkloric music and culture with award winning singer, songwriter and Dominican Folk Music researcher Irka Mateo. The program will reflect the Dominican Republic's vibrant Taino, Spanish and African musical heritage.
The event will be coordinated with the support of the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the United Nations.
Date: Thursday, July 5, 2012
Time: 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Location: United Nations Headquarters, Dag Hammarskjold Auditorium.

Second Edition of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival

The second edition of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) will be celebrated in the Dominican Republic from September 5-9, 2012.
The Festival raises awareness and deepens understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences, while celebrating the beauty and diversity of the country's natural heritage. Through screening a diverse selection of high-quality films on matters of environmental concern, and organizing panel discussions with environmental experts, filmmakers and other stakeholders, the Festival seeks to foster dialogue and to inspire Dominican audiences to adopt practices that will ensure for the health and environmental sustainability of the country.
