DREFF’s Nominee, “Death by a Thousand Cuts”, Finalist in the 2017 Green Film Network Award!

The Dominican Film “Death by a Thousand Cuts”, screened at the 2016 Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), has been selected as one of the finalist in this year’s Green Film Network (GFN) Award. This was DREFF’s nomination for the renown international
environmental film prize, “Green Cinema Award”, organized by GFN, a prestigious network of the world’s best environmental film festivals. DREFF is a member of GFN.

The winner will be announced at Planet in Focus, Canada’s foremost and longest running environmental film festival, on October 20th, 2017. Films nominated represent the “Best International Film” screened at each of the GFN’s almost 40
festivals around the world.

In 2016, the GFN Award was hosted by DREFF in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the winner was “Landfill Harmonic”.

About the Film
In Death by A Thousand Cuts, Eligio Eloy Vargas, alias Melaneo, a Dominican Park Ranger in the Sierra de Bahoruco National Park is found brutally murdered by machete. Melaneo was believed to have been on patrol
investigating illegal charcoal production by Haitians working within the protected Dominican forests. This murder becomes the metaphor for the larger story of increasing tension between Haiti and the Dominican Republic over illicit charcoal exploitation and large-scale deforestation. As in so many global struggles for natural resources, the fight for survival leads to scapegoating, xenophobia and clashes between communities.
