Dr. Leonel Fernández Travels to Mexico, Ecuador and Argentina

March 27, 2017

This past Sunday the President of the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Dr. Leonel Fernández, began a trip to Mexico, Ecuador and Argentina, where he will attend several scheduled meetings.

Dr. Fernández, who also is the President of the European Union – Latin American and Caribbean Foundation (EU-LAC Foundation) begins his travels on Monday in Guanajuato, Mexico, where he
will participate as a special guest in the Foro Latinoamericano para una Democracia Inclusiva and the Foro Democracia de Nueva Generación para las Américas, events organized by the Club de Madrid and Centro Fox.

The meeting will bring together political, intellectual and social leaders from Latin America in an open debate about future challenges for democracy in the region and the necessity to create more inclusive societies for the development and
sustainability of the democratic system.

At the forum, which will continue until next Tuesday, Dr. Fernández and members of the Club de Madrid will approach the topics “Challenges and Opportunities for Democracy in the Americas,” “Neo-populism, Inequality and the Decline of the Welfare State in the Americas” and “How to Strengthen Democracy and Combat New Forms of Populism?”

Several
prominent figures will participate in these discussions including: Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary General of the Ibero American Conference; former President of Mexico, Vicente Fox; Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of the Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL); and Jorge Castañeda, politician and analyst, among other members of the Club de Madrid.

From Mexico, Dr. Fernández will travel to Quito, the capital of Ecuador, where on April 2 he will fulfill
his commitment as head of the Misión de Observación Electoral de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA).

It is important to remember that in the Ecuadorian elections, which took place last February 19, neither presidential campaign attained an absolute majority of votes. Therefore, the two candidates with the most votes must participate in a run-off election on Sunday, April 2.

The final part of Dr. Fernández’s trip will be in Argentina,
where he will participate as a special guest in a meeting of the Foro Económico Mundial para América Latina, which will be held April 5 and 7 in Buenos Aires, the capital of the South American country.

At this event, regional and world leaders from the public and private sector will come together to debate the process toward the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Latin America.
