Dr. Leonel Fernández Launches Book of Speeches in New York City

April 30, 2017

With a spacious room filled with Dominicans and other Latin residents in New York, the president of GFDD/Funglode, Dr. Leonel Fernández, put into circulation his book collection “Democracy, Modernity and Progress,” a compilation of the main speeches made during his three terms as leader of the country, on Friday night.

The launch of the publication took place in the Main Dining Room of the Union League Club in Manhattan. The agenda included a conversation facilitated by former vice
president Rafael Alburquerque and the director of the newspaper Diario Libre, Adriano Miguel Tejada, who directed comments and questions at former president Fernández about the contents of the book, the topics considered, his influence in the speeches and other inquiries about his three terms of governance.

At the event, organized by the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), various
diplomats were in attendance, among them ambassador Frank Cortorreal, head of the Dominican mission to the United Nations (UN) and president of the PLD branch in New York. The event was also attended by academics, students, political leaders, writers, businesspeople and representatives from the Dominican community in New York.

On Saturday a similar celebration took place in Miami, Florida, beginning at 7:00 pm in the Grand Doral Ballroom of the Intercontinental
Hotel.

It is important to note that the book was put into circulation both in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, as well as in Santiago de los Caballeros, the second most important city in the Caribbean country. Both acts had great success and received attention in written and electronic platforms.

Fernández governed the Dominican Republic on three occasions (1996-2000, 2004-2008 and 2008-2012), through democratic elections, which
were free of controversy, setting a precedent in that regard.
