Dominican Get-togethers in the Big Apple Branch Out To The Garden State
September 28, 2011
The Dominican Get-togethers in the Big Apple have been received so well in New York, that Southern New Jersey has also formally requested that GFDD and FUNGLODE partner with them on this initiative.
GFDD and FUNGLODE, in association with the Dominican American Chamber of Commerce of Southern New Jersey, are hosting a major Dominican Get-together in the Garden State. The event will take place
on Friday, October 14th, 2011 at Rutgers University in Camden, NJ, from 6:30-9:30 pm.
The special event, taking place in an area with a high Dominican population, will feature a screening of the acclaimed documentary The Republic of Baseball, a personal story of the epic 1962 World Series as told by Juan Marichal, Felipe Alou, Orlando Cepeda & Willie McCovey. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with the producer, Rob Ruck, on the
issue of race in sports. Invitees also include former baseball great and current Yankees coach, Tony Pena, as well as one of his Dominican players, Jesus Alou, all of whom have supported GFDD and FUNGLODE at past Dominican Get-togethers.
The objectives of the Dominican Get-togethers are primarily to promote a better understanding of the richness and diversity of Dominican culture; to enjoy and celebrate its prominent figures and upcoming talents; and to create a forum for
reflection and discussion of topics relevant to the Dominican community in the U.S. and at home.
