ANU-RD Executive Director Elected to Board of World Federation of UN Associations
November 27, 2015
The United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNADR or ANU-RD by its Spanish acronym), a close collaborator of GFDD, was pleased to participate in the 41st General Assembly of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). The meeting, which is held every three years, took place this year in Vancouver on November 20 to 22.
The meeting brought together more than 187 representatives from 45 United Nations Associations worldwide. The
work sessions saw the approval of several resolutions on various topics including the newly adopted Sustainable Development Agenda, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women, and a call to all UN member states to combat the scourge of international terrorism.
During the Assembly an electoral process was held to constitute the new Executive Committee of the WFUNA. A majority vote was secured among attendees to select the Executive Director of
ANU-RD, Emil Chireno. The committee members, which are elected for 3 year terms, coordinate the organization’s programming and financial agenda. It is composed of academics, diplomats, and civil society leaders whose work supports the United Nations.
With his election, Chireno has become the youngest member and the first Dominican to sit on the council since the founding of the Federation in 1946.
WFUNA is a global nonprofit representing more
than 100 United Nations Associations worldwide. The organization is guided by the UN’s governing principles and has offices in New York, Geneva, Seoul, and Brussels. It was founded August 2, 1946, with the aim of serving as a privileged channel of interaction between global civil society and the United Nations.
