GFDD Attends Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association, the Largest Gathering for Professional Historians in the United States

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) attended the 126th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association that took place in Chicago, Illinois, January 5-8, 2012. The theme of the 2012 conference was “Communities and Networks,” featuring multiple sessions on digital humanities and the incorporation of technological tools for historical research and the teaching of history. This year’s theme was of particular interest to the Foundation, as advancing
innovation in technology and education is among its primary objectives.

The Association is the leading historical organizations for historians working in the United States. Founded in 1884, the association provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge and best practices related to research, methodology and teaching. Attracting over 5,000 historians from all over the United States, the event is vital meeting ground for professionals interested in making a name for
themselves within the field.

During the four day meeting, GFDD representatives had the opportunity to attend numerous panel sessions related to diverse topics on including: the digital humanities; Latin American History; colonialism; class, race and gender; collective memory; history of the African Diaspora; the genealogy of regional studies as a discipline within US academia.

Through participating in these sessions, research and project coordinators of
the foundations gained exposure to dominant trends and topics of debate within in the field. The conference also provided an unprecedented occasion for GFDD and FUNGLODE representatives to network with distinguished scholars from universities throughout the United States.

GFDD attends seminars and conferences related to the social sciences in order to remain at the forefront of academic debate and network with renowned experts, as part of their mission to expand research
and bring world-class programs to the Dominican Republic. Contacts made during the 126th Annual Meeting will contribute to GFDD’s ongoing program of work in the area of technology and teacher training.
