InteRDom and City College Create New Program: Summer Study for Teachers and Grads

Building on the success of the service learning program launched last year, InteRDom Internships in the Dominican Republic and the Study Abroad Department of the City College of New York are pleased to introduce a new program to debut in the summer of 2012, Dominican Summer Study for Teachers and Grads.

From July 21st—August 18th, 2012 students will participate in an agenda that includes seminars, lectures, activities, tours and site visits
highlighting a number of topics including, but not limited to: Caribbean culture and identity, religiosity, how to incorporate Caribbean topics into the U.S. classroom, and bilateral Dominican-Haitian relations, among others.

The Summer Study for Teachers and Grads program responds to the need identified by City College Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies Juan Carlos Mercado, Director of Study Abroad, to have an academic program in the Dominican Republic in recognition of
the large number of students of Dominican heritage who attend the City College of New York. 

The program targets teachers and CUNY graduate students of education, but is open to interested graduate students of all fields and exceptional undergraduate students in education.  It seeks to present important Caribbean topics in an academic context to educators who will raise consciousness both amongst the youth of the Dominican Diaspora and other populations
about the culture, heritage and development of this important historic and economic site in the Americas.

Students interested in participating in the
program are encouraged to attend an information session with InteRDom and Study Abroad representatives in the City College Study Abroad office on Thursday, February 16th or Thursday, March 29th from 12:30 – 2 p.m.  At the information session, students will learn more about the itineraries, costs and program logistics, of both this and the service-learning program that will
run at the beginning of the summer.

Students are encouraged to begin the application process early in order to ensure their participation and access to scholarship and financial aid opportunities through City College and the Study Abroad office.  The application is downloadable on the InteRDom website, and can also be obtained in hard copy from the City College Study Abroad Office.

The internship program, InteRDom, an initiative of Global
Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), is the premier internship, research and academic study program in the Dominican Republic. It offers international students the opportunity to research important topics at the forefront of the United Nations agenda, obtain professional experience by interning with Dominican organizations and businesses related
to their fields of study and/or earn academic credits by taking courses and seminars at a local university.
