FUNGLODE and GFDD to host economic forum “Economic Perspectives and Challenges for Central America and the Caribbean in the Global Economy”

September 28, 2011

FUNGLODE and GFDD will convene a forum in collaboration with the Organization of American States at the FUNGLODE headquarters on October 6, 2011 from 3:00pm – 6:00pm titled "Economic Perspectives and Challenges for Central America and the Caribbean in the Global Economy."

The activity, which aims to motivate the strengthening of economic ties between Central America and the Caribbean in
accordance with the agenda agreed upon by the Heads of State during the San Salvador SICA-CARICOM Summit, will be attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Central America and the Caribbean, and the Ministers of Finance, Economy, Industry and Commerce have also been invited to participate.

The economic forum makes up part of the agenda of the fifth (V) Americas Competitiveness Forum, whose theme this year focuses on Commitment to Education and Competitiveness, and
is organized by the Dominican National Council on Competitiveness with the support of different local and international organizations such as GFDD/FUNGLODE  and the UN training Centre at CIFAL Atlanta. The Forum constitutes an ideal gathering of public and private sectors to discuss and exchange ideas on best practices in such fundamental issues as the green economy, competitive education, innovation in services, trade facilitation and the regional business climate in the
Americas.

Between Central America and the Caribbean is a market of more than 55 million people, so leaders and investors keen to take advantage of the economic potential of both regions have an excellent opportunity to bolster a trade network that has thus far been modest.

The ACF is the most relevant event in the Western hemisphere pertaining to this topic and will be held from October 5-7 in Santo Domingo, which is the 2011 Capital of Competitiveness
for the Americas.

To date, the Competitiveness Forum has been held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in 2007, 2008, and 2010, and in Santiago de Chile in 2009. It is intended to facilitate the growth of business and the exchange of ideas and knowledge in the countries of the Americas to enable them to become more innovative, productive and competitive.
