Annual Model United Nations to take place in April at Hunter College and UN headquarters in NYC
April 6, 2011More than 400 Dominican students will attend the 2011 NY Dominican Republic Model United Nations (NYDRMUN) at Hunter College at the City University of New York and the UN Headquarters on April 16 -20, 2011.
This will be ninth time the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNARD), in association with GFDD/FUNGLODE has organized the gathering which
provides a platform for students to engage in discussion about major challenges facing the international community and to devise possible solutions.
It will offer Dominican students, and those from all across the world, an opportunity to formulate resolutions and proposals that correspond to the UN””s Agenda and its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The eight Millennium Development Goals – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting
the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and the world’s leading development institutions.
In addition to the umbrella themes of the MDGs, the 5 day conference will examine and debate important political issues such as; Peace and Security in Africa,(Libya), the situations in Haiti, Palestine, Somalia and the economic embargo of
Cuba amongst others.
Participating in NYDRMUN gives students an insider look at the work conducted by diplomatic representatives to the UN. On an individual level it also gives participants the opportunity to gain professional experience as they debate and justify their positions on international issues within the context of UN procedures.
