Conference in Santo Domingo on Potential and Constraints of Gold Mining

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) will organize the conference “Global Perspectives on Gold Mining: Assessing Potential and Constraints,” on Wednesday, March 23 at 7:00 p.m. at FUNGLODE headquarters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Through the panel, the organizations hope to further awareness amongst policymakers and
practitioners of the following:
- The role of gold mining within overall sustainable development paradigms
- Economic potential
- Environmental and human health concerns
- Best practices
- Challenges and recommendations
- The future of gold mining in the Dominican Republic
The event will feature presentations by Ben Peachey,
Communications Director for the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM); David Le Blanc, Senior Sustainable Development Officer for the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs; and Octavio López, Director of the National Office on Mining of the Dominican Republic, as well as participation by Omar Ramírez, Director of the Center for Environmental and Sustainable Development Studies, FUNGLODE; Executive Vice-President of the Presidential
Commission on Climate Change and the Clean Development Mechanism for the Government of the Dominican Republic; and former Minister of Environment in the Dominican Republic.
This event is open to the public.
