Training Session on Biodiversity Conservation for Judges from Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica

Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), in association with the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) in Washington, DC, the United Nations Environment Programme, the Escuela Nacional de Judicatura (National School of Judicial Studies) in the Dominican Republic, the Norman Manley School of Law in Jamaica, and Konbit Pou Ayiti
(KONPAY) in Haiti, will organize a training program for judges from the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica on biodiversity conservation, August 25 – 27, 2008. The objective of the initiative is to equip judicial professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure that existing laws related to biodiversity protection, conservation management, forestry, land use, and pollution control are understood, implemented and maintained. The program will take place at FUNGLODE

This session forms part of a three year program, funded by the John D. & Catherine T. Mac Arthur Foundation, which began January of this year and will continue until December 2010. During this period, the collaborating institutions will develop, test and adapt to each
country, curriculum pertinent to issues of environmental concern in the Region, in an effort to strengthen work being realized by local institutions in the area of environmental conservation. Materials will be created in Spanish, English and French and will be circulated throughout the legal community. All sessions will be conducted by a team of experts comprised of ELI Senior Attorneys, UNEP staff and experts from the Region.

As part of their commitment to environmental protection, GFDD and FUNGLODE develop national and international projects and organize conferences and forums designed to promote awareness and improved understanding of environmental issues.
