Conference About Water as a Scarce Resource and Luxury Item

April 16, 2008
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), Fundacion Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), and the Dominican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources have invited lawyer and researcher Teodosio Palomino to speak about the relevance of water scarcity and its use and distribution throughout the world.

“Water: Blue
Gold”
is the theme of the conference scheduled Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at FUNGLODE Headquarters in Santo Domingo. The conference is free and open to the public.

Mr. Palomino will share his expertise as a researcher on the use and availability of water, which he has elaborated upon in his book, The Tragedy of Blue Gold-Water is Life.

Quote from book:
“Although it might seem impossible to believe, in fact more than 1.2 billion people in the world do not enjoy the simple luxury of safe and readily available drinking water. This can be easily proven and it is really a tragedy. They have no water to drink, not even water to wash their hands.”

A self-proclaimed advocate of the use of water for the benefit of humanity, Palomino asserts that water currently garners more wealth than any other money-producing enterprise or product. He cautions that this reality has provoked many analysts to conclude that the dispute over water will cause serious conflicts in the near future.

The conference is being offered in preparation for
the Dominican Republic’s participation in the upcoming Expo Zaragoza 2008 to be held in the city of Zaragoza, Spain, June 14 — September 14, 2008.
