DRGFF Attends 2008 Sundance Film Festival

January 28, 2008
The Dominican Republic Global Film Festival (DRGFF), an initiative of Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) attended the most recent edition of Sundance, the world’s most renowned independent film festival, March 17-27, 2008, in Park
City, Utah.

The DRGFF team, represented by Natasha Despotovic, GFDD Executive Director and FUNGLODE Vice President; Semiramis de Miranda, GFDD ICT Manager; and Asunción Sanz, GFDD Program Coordinator, participated in the event, in which they promoted DRGFF’s mission and vision, as part of its
goal to support the development of the Dominican cinematographic industry, and in turn, the development of the country.

The DRGFF team had the opportunity to become familiar with the latest cinematographic trends, first-hand from some of the most innovative industry professionals, and vanguard projects to date, in an effort to take away valuable lessons that will contribute to the growth and development of GFDD and
FUNGLODE’s projects in the area of audiovisual arts, in particular, programs and activities realized by the Global Media Arts Institute (GMAI).

Participation in the Sundance Film Festival is a must for all professionals affiliated with the independent film industry in the United States and worldwide. During its thirty years of
existence, the festival has identified new voices, innovative techniques and provocative perspectives that have expanded existing channels of cinematographic creation and artistic expression throughout the world. The festival offers a space in which to reflect upon new formats, editing strategies and technologies, as well as the introduction of new platforms, in combination with, or in exchange for, more conventional ones.

The 116
program presentations of 2008 offered ample opportunities to identify and consider the new perspectives and creative means permeating present day cinematographic productions. Full-length films and documentaries, grouped in distinct categories such as short film, animation and other genres destined for new platforms, competed for the favor of the jury and general public.

The informal setting of the festival lent itself to professional networking and the exchange of ideas concerning the present state of the cinematographic industry and its interests and possibilities.

DRGFF plays a leading role in nurturing film culture in the Dominican Republic by bringing the best of international narrative and documentary film to a wide audience. The Festival raises awareness and deepens understanding of global challenges while
using film as a modern platform for the discussion of political, social and economic issues. It supports capacity building, provides network opportunities for Dominican professionals and fosters the development of a strong and sustainable national film industry.
