Funglode Advances to Position 38 in the Ranking of Best Think Tanks in Latin America

For the fourth consecutive year, Funglode is one of the best think tanks in the world, in the categories of Environmental Policy, Foreign Policy and International Affairs, Use of Social Networks, and Think Tanks to Watch.
Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode) has been selected, for the fourth consecutive year, among the best think tanks in Latin America, in the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report 2017, of the University of Pennsylvania.
In this edition, Funglode ascended 10 positions, going from position 48 to 38 among the most prestigious think tanks in Latin America, of the group of 80 that were registered in 2017 in the report. The first place went to the Getulio Vargas Foundation, which has more than 70 years of uninterrupted work in the region.
The document was published on Tuesday, January 30, at the Foundation”s headquarters, at a meeting that was theaded by Marcos Villamán, Rector of the Global Institute of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences (IGLOBAL), an academic initiative of Funglode. The event was
attended by collaborators, researchers and coordinators in areas and initiatives of the Foundation.
Villamán stated that it is a great satisfaction for Funglode and its entire team to be part, for the fourth time, of this ranking that measures the influence of think tanks at an international level. He said that it is in recognition of the sustained work that Fundación Global has produced since its creation at the end of the year 2000.
Funglode was
selected in five of the 55 categories analyzed in the study: in Environmental Policy it occupies position 91; in Foreign policy and international affairs it is ranked 110, while in the Use of Social Networks, it came in position 75.
In addition, Funglode occupies position 98 among the think tanks to watch around the world. The Institute for International Policiy
Studies (ISPI for its acronym in Spanish), from Italy, ranks first in this category, followed by the Heritage Foundation, of the United States.
Two new categories were added to the ranking this year: Water Security and Food Security. The ranking also assessed the usefulness of the organization’s information for
public commitment, in the preparation and presentation of research data, in the use of electronic media, its use of printed materials and its use of new communication media, and its reputation according to the number of its appearances in communication media.
The Brookings Institution, of the United States, was selected as the best think tank in the world in 2017, followed by
the Chatham House (United Kingdom), the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) (France), and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) (United
States).
The best think tanks of the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report 2017, by region, are: In Sub-Saharan Africa, the Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis (BIDPA) of Botswana; in Mexico and Canada, the Fraser Institute of Canada; in Central and
South America, the Getulio Vargas Foundation of Brasil; in Central Asia, the Center for Economic and Social Development (CESD) of Azerbaijan; in China, India, Japan and the Republic of Korea, the Korea Development Institute (KDI) of the Republic of Korea.
In Southeastern Asia and the Pacific rim, the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS) of Singapore; in
Eastern Europe and Central Europe, the Center for Social and Economic Research (CASE) of Poland; in Eastern Europe, the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) of France; and in the Middle Eastern and North Africa, the Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) of Jordan.
Funglode in the Global Go To Think Tank Index Report
Funglode was the first Dominican think tank to gain entry to the Global Go To Think Tanks Index Report, in the year 2014.
In the report for the year 2015, Funglode occupied position 48 among the 90 selected centers; in the category Use of Social Networks, it occupied
position 72, out of the 80 chosen, and in the category of Environment, it ranked 90, out of 95. It ranked 110 out of 133 leaders in Foreign Policy and International Affairs.
In 2016, Funglode entered, for the first time, the ranking of the think tanks around the world to watch, in position 98. It occupied position 76 in the Use of Social Networks; position 90, in Environment, and positon 111 in topics on Foreign Policy and International Affairs.
About the report
The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the Lauder Institute (TTCSP) of the University of Pennsylvania, presents each year the index that assesses the best think tanks in more than 75 countries and 100 cities in the world. In 2017, more than 6,500 were evaluated.
The evaluation of
the think tanks was carried out by more than 2,543 faculty members, university administrators, journalists, policy makers, academics and think tanks executives, as well as 900 regional specialists. They served as expert panelists and contributed their knowledge for the elaboration of the annual report.
