GFDD and Kitchen Connection Celebrate United Nations Day

October 25, 2017

To celebrate United Nations Day, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) teamed up with the UNA-USA Council of Organizations and Earlene Cruz, founder of Kitchen Connection, to take viewers around the world on a virtual culinary tour to Morocco in an event titled: “Spices for Peace.”

Held just opposite the United Nations at the historic UN Church Center, author and food blogger Nargisse Benkabbou teleconferenced in from
her home in Morocco to instruct the audience on how to prepare Amlou, a decadent Moroccan spread made from roasted almonds, honey, and argan oil.

But watching and learning was just half of the day’s fun: the attendees also prepared the recipe alongside Benkabbou, enjoying the results thoroughly. Afterwards, a brief discussion was held between
Benkabbou and the audience where each shared their culinary experiences. During the day’s activities, Cruz noted the unique properties of food in bringing together people around the world.

Kitchen Connection is an online community that brings together chefs and food lovers to participate in interactive online cooking classes. Each month, the culinary contributions and customs of one country are featured by chefs or country natives with the goals of broadening
international understanding and combatting cultural misrepresentations through the sharing of cuisine.

United Nations Day takes place on October 24th, the anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, and is devoted to spreading information about the aims and achievements of the United Nations to people around the world. This year, UN Secretary General António Guterres marked the day by stating that “We have to transcend our differences to transform our
future… All we need is the will.”

Regarding Secretary General Guterres’ words, Cruz stated: “Food is a vehicle for change; food is a platform for that.”
