GFDD Supports CUNY Dominican Studies Institute forum

September 21, 2017

Faced with a challenging external environment, Latin American and Caribbean growth as a whole has stagnated in recent years. While some countries have remained bastions of the regional economy, others have seen precipitous drops in GDP growth. To address these and other relevant issues, GFDD and CUNY’s Dominican Studies Institute will convene a panel of economic and political experts on October 16th for a roundtable discussion titled: “Latin America and
the Caribbean: Economic Outlook and Challenges towards the Future.” The event will take place in the DSI’s Dominican Archives and Dominican Library.

In August, the ECLAC Economic Development Division published its 2017 Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean. Daniel Titelman, Chief of the Division, will be present to review key insights from the report and tease out implications and expectations for the future. Alongside Mr. Titelman, Dr.
Marta Bengoa, author of numerous articles about the determinants of economic growth and incidence of inequality and poverty in Latin America and CUNY professor of economics, will be present. Dr. Bengoa has also collaborated with intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations such as the World Bank and the United Nations on economic growth-related projects in Latin America.

Last but not least, one final individual must be mentioned. Throughout his career in public
service, U.S. Representative Adriano Espaillat from New York’s 13th Congressional District has been an advocate for smart investments in economic development, job creation, and environmental protection. He has also spoken of problems shared between Caribbean countries such as energy prices and susceptibility to natural disasters, and has advocated for the U.S. and Caribbean nations to work together on disaster protocols and security initiatives. It will be a great honor to count
on Congressman Espaillat’s participation, which is sure to be timely and engaging, in the evening’s event.
