Five and Six Year Old Students from Two Santo Domingo Schools Take Part in Fun, Educational Recycling Workshops

ReCrearte coordinator Lucia Marte had a busy day on Thursday, April 27, when she facilitated creative recycling activities at Escuela Higuero Abajo and Escuela Perantuen in Santo Domingo, DR.  Marte’s first stop was in the morning at Escuela Higuero Abajo, where she was joined by 14 students, as well as two teachers from that school. The ReCrearte coordinator led the group in an educational workshop with teaching materials in disuse. The students learned how
to tell left from right, identify the colors, shapes, senses, and numbers, as well as complete puzzles and play with theatre puppets.

Following the activities at the Higuero Abajo school, a similar ReCrearte workshop was held at the Escuela Perantuen in the afternoon. In attendance were 18 young boys and girls, and a teacher from the Perantuen school.

In addition to educational games, Marte led the groups from both schools in conversations about the three R’s for the proper management of
solid waste: reduce, reuse and recycle. All of the students who participated in the April 28 workshops were between the ages of five and six.

These activities were done in collaboration with the ECOESCUELA project of the Dominican Republic Institute for Environmental Law (IDARD, for its acronym in Spanish). The ECOESCUELA project organizes educational programs where community members can gather to practice environmentalism and work together to support recycling efforts in
their neighborhoods and local schools.

demonstrate and emphasize the idea that recycling waste and transforming it into art and objects for daily use strengthen individuals and communities alike.
