Washington D.C. Welcomes the Dominican Film Showcase, a Treat to the Dominican Diaspora and Film Lovers

Once more, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is getting ready to celebrate the Dominican Film Showcase in the nation’s capital from November 2 to 4. Washington, D.C. will host a selection of some of the best and most recent Dominican movies: Flor de Azúcar, La familia Reyna and Los fabulosos ma’ mejores.

The GFDD initiative, that helps to boost Dominican film
and its promotion abroad and to cultivate an appreciation for the culture of the island, will take place at the Gala Hispanic Theatre (3333 14th St. NW), where Sugar Fields will inaugurate the event, and the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States (201 18th St., NW).

Flor de Azúcar of the award-winning director and producer Fernando Báez will kick of the three days celebration of Dominican cinema. This film will compete for the nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 89th Academy Awards. The inauguration will take place on Wednesday, November 2 at 6:00 pm at the Gala Hispanic Theater and will be attended by the director of the film. After a Q&A session with the filmmaker, guests will enjoy a cocktail at the
theater’s cafe.

Flor de Azúcar tells the story of a young farmer who is forced to flee for involuntarily killing an abusive guard. After an entire year hiding in a remote fishermen island, he decides to return to his countryside and reunite with his wife and daughters. Based on the story by Juan Bosch "La Nochebuena de Encarnación Mendoza ", the film is a cry for freedom, love and justice, with a strong human and cultural
content.

During the showcase, Tito Rodriguez´s debut as director, La familia Reyna will be screened on Thursday, November 3. The film has been presented for consideration for Best Latin American Film at the Goya´s, awarded by the Spanish Academy of Arts and Motion Picture Sciences. The feature narrates the story of the rebellious eldest son of a prosperous family return home, which sets off a series of events that will help them forget old feuds. Danilo
Reynoso, producer of the film, will be present at the screening.

The AMA will also stage, on November 4th, the comedy Los fabulosos ma´mejores, first Dominican children’s comedy on baseball that aims to shape a positive message to viewers with laughter, tears and magic, through a colorful narration. It is the story of a Dominican baseball team of doubtful talent and scarce resources that along with their crackpot coach has to figure how to use
their charm and wit to participate in the first tournament of Little League Dominican Baseball. The evening will be attended by actress and producer of the film Celinés Toribio.

The three films, seals of the Dominican culture, will bring joy to audience of the nation´s capital and make them reflect, while also creating opportunities for an ever-widening audience to enjoy this art form, become familiar with Dominican culture, and speak with filmmakers.
