Passion for the Sea, Recycled Fashion and NYFA Student´s Photographs Exhibit at DREFF 2016

August 17, 2016

The 6th Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) is excited to announce the three exhibitions that will be part of this year’s special activities taking place during the 6 days of the festival. These exhibitions will be open during the festival, which will take place from September 13th – 18th. They include Mar Vivo – The Living Sea Photographic Exhibit; Expo RD Recicla – A Space to Showcase Sustainable Fashion during DREFF; and the New York
Film Academy Student Photography Exhibition. Now in its sixth year, the DREFF, an initiative of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode), continues to serve as a catalyst for programs and projects that contribute to environmental and socio-economic sustainability in the Dominican Republic and abroad.

Written and featuring photos by the author Guillermo Ricart, a civil engineer by profession and underwater photographer by passion, Mar Vivo (The Living Sea) is one of the most detailed and thorough iconographic assessments of the Dominican reefs. In telling the unique tale of each region, Ricart warns that the quality of the marine shores surrounding the island have severely deteriorated due to the combination of the irresponsible actions committed by
humans, and purely environmental causes. Despite this deterioration, Ricart demonstrates that the reefs still maintain their beauty and continue to be suitable spaces fit for practicing amateur and professional scuba diving. He emphasizes that there is still time to save our seas and its wildlife and contributes to this effort through his panoramic photos of breathtaking scenery, each with captions that detail the impressive marine fauna residing in the Dominican shores and
beyond.

Expo RD Recicla – A Space to Showcase Sustainable Fashion during DREFF
Galeria  Funglode

The ReCrearte program, a GFDD/Funglode initiative, will showcase clothing, accessories, and crafts promoting sustainable fashion and recycling in the country. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that not all that is thrown away is garbage – with a little
creativity, it can be reimagined and turned into something inspirational and beautiful. The exhibition is open to the public throughout the entire festival.

New York Film Academy Student Photography Exhibition – Environment: The Dominican Republic
Galeria Funglode

For years, the New York Film Academy (NYFA) has been organizing and leading travel expeditions for both the academy’s
Photography and Documentary Film Departments. The work chosen for this exhibition at DREFF 2016 is from NYFA students that have traveled to the Dominican Republic in the past two years. The simple assignment to the students was to tell visual stories about their experience in the DR. Some of the works are classic landscapes, portraying the environment in its natural beauty; other works take a hard look at how the environment is treated, or mistreated, by its residents. What they present is
evocative, passionate, compelling, and visually interesting, whether it is presented through portraits, landscapes, social commentary, or images of the local cuisine.

About DREFF
Since its creation in 2011, the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival has been providing Dominicans with a platform of knowledge and debate on the environment and sustainable development, along with its challenges and best practices, while celebrating the
unique beauty and wealth that is the Dominican Republic’s natural heritage. With a diverse selection of films and numerous panels, workshops, seminars, and community activities, DREFF promotes dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and experience, inspiring Dominicans to adopt actions that contribute to the appreciation, conservation, and sustainable use of their environmental resources.
